THE OBAMA NEIGHBORHOOD WALK

A walk through the First Family's neighborhood showcases the oldest federal building in Washington DC – the White House!
Also see the stately Decatur House, home to a young Naval hero and later, the notorious property of a wealthy slave dealer.  On the opposite corner is the site of a bank formerly managed by the Freedman's Bureau.

Across the street stands the Hay Adams Hotel, St. John's Church, Dolly Madison's home, Blair House and the Old Executive Office Building.  Photos can be taken of the White House exterior and tour will end at the White House Visitor's Center on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Tour begins at McPherson Square Metro (Blue and Orange Line) Ends at White House Visitors Center, Federal Triangle Metro (blue and Orange Line)

Follow the pitter-patter of little paws through Lafayette Square and around the White House, as you hear tales of the adventures of "First Pets" who have lived in the White House.  Your own furry friend (on a leash, please) is welcome to come along.  Remember to "BYOB" (Bring You Own Baggie).

Enter your pet companion in the 1st Pet Look-Alike contest.  The winner who most closely resembles an official 1st Pet will have his winning photo placed on our website: uctours.com!  Come with your pooch or un-escorted.  Walk through Lafayette Park to the White House and then the long block around the White House from 17th St. to Constitution Ave. and up 15th St. to the White House Visitors Center.

Climb the incline over the C&O Canal on Wisconsin Avenue to 'Herring Hill' – named by the African American residents who lived in that western part of the city.  Before 1950, there were eight Black churches within this tiny neighborhood adjoining Rock Creek Park!  Learn about the prominent citizens, including the sisters who paved the way for Venus and Serena.

Tour begins at the Georgetown Harbor, Wisconsin Avenue and K St. NW. Meet at the southwest corner of Wisconsin Ave. and K St. NW near Georgetown Harbor.  Tour ends at Mt. Zion Cemetery (the G-W bus) on Q St. NW.

HEROES ON THE HILL:
African American History Around the
Capitol Building

Saturday, October 24, 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Start at Union Station, where A. Philip Randolph, the organizer of the Sleeping Car Porters is recognized.  Walk to the Supreme Court building where Justice Thurgood Marshall rendered major Supreme Court decisions. Frederick Douglass, the abolitionist and champion of equal rights for women, owned a home directly east of the present Supreme Court building. Learn about the builders of the Capitol building and the ethnological sculpture on the Library of Congress.   Walk to Lincoln Park where a statue of Mary McLeod Bethune stands proudly facing the Emancipation Monument — a memorial dedicated to enslaved Americans and Abraham Lincoln.  Financed entirely by the wages of former slaves, this monument was dedicated 47 years before the Lincoln Memorial was built!

Meet at Union Station (Red Line Metro), next to the Freedom Bell

Come and capture this twilight walking adventure! Hear the murmuring cascades that echo near Capitol Hill. View the mirrored stillness of reflecting pools.

This pleasant walk includes visits to the Capitol's Summer House, the Neptune Fountain, the Japanese American Memorial, the Columbus Fountain at Union Station and many other commanding aquatic sites.

Cost is $15 per person. Meet at the Columbus Fountain, on the north front of the Freedom Bell at Union Station (Red Line Metro)

Stroll down the 'Black Broadway' that flourished in the 1920's through the early 1960's.  Enjoy reminiscences of the superstars featured at the Bohemian Caverns.  This is Duke Ellington's neighborhood, where he went to school and later performed his first composition, 'Soda Fountain Rag.'  Visit the African American Civil War memorial that gives recognition to the United States Colored Troops, Seamen and Black Confederate soldiers who fought in the Civil War.  Grab a hot dog from Ben's Chili Bowl, the establishment where Bill Cosby ordered three 'half-smokes' when courting his future wife, Camille.

Meet at 10th and U Street NW— Cardozo-Civil War Memorial Metro stop   (Green Line)  Tour ends at 14th and U Street

MOUNT PLEASANT INDEED

Take an easy walk down the streets of this unique neighborhood that is sometimes referred to as 'the little United Nations'.  Unusual street patterns and beautiful architecture dominate the area that was settled mostly by New Englanders after the Civil War.  Along with Columbia Heights it is presently a vibrant center of Latin American culture.  It was also at one time, home to progressive Wisconsin senator, Robert LaFollette and blues singer, Bo Diddley.

Tour begins and ends at the Columbia Heights Metro, at the southwest corner of 14th St. and Irving, NW, in front of Five Guys

WALKIN' BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON

Enjoy the night-time view of memorials to four beloved American Presidents and the three major wars of the 20th Century.  Begin at the Washington Monument for a commanding view of the National Mall – from the Capitol building to the Lincoln Memorial.  Visit the World War II, Vietnam and Korean War Memorials.  Stand at the Lincoln Memorial and gaze on the reflecting pool that mirrors the  Washington monument.  Walk to the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial - along the Tidal Basin to the Jefferson Memorial and see where the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial will be located.

Tour begins at the Washington Monument (closest Metro Smithsonian, Orange/Blue lines) and ends at the Jefferson Memorial (also close to Smithsonian Metro)

Complete your Thanksgiving weekend guilt-free with a brisk walk around Hains Point.  Start at the Jefferson Memorial refreshment stand.  Walk along the Potomac and continue to the eastern tip of the peninsula where Ft. McNair, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the state of Maryland are all in clear view.  Make the entire circuit back to the Jefferson Memorial.  See other important historic sites along the river shores.  No leftovers allowed, but do bring water.
