the stately Decatur House, home to a Naval hero and later, a notorious
slave-holder. Across the street stand the Hay Adams Hotel, St. John's
Church, Dolly Madison's home, Blair House, and the Old Executive
Office Building. Photos can be taken of the White House exterior
and tour will end at the White House Visitors Center on Pennsylvania
Avenue.

AT LINCOLN PARK

Walk with us from Union Station, where your guide
will discuss the symbols of that historic building and the Columbus
Fountain. Proceed up to Capitol Hill and see Frederick Douglass'
first home in Washington, DC. See the Sewall-Belmont House, where
early suffragists rallied for the right of women to vote. Walk continues
to historic Lincoln Park to visit the statue of Mary McLeod Bethune,
the tireless educator who advised four American presidents. Also
at this site is the Emancipation Monument, a statue dedicated to
Abraham Lincoln, financed by the wages of former slaves.

THE WAR MEMORIALS

Washington, DC, the Federal City has built monuments
to commemorate the major wars of the 20th century. Starting with
the recently dedicated WWII Memorial, you will walk the National
mall to see the WWI Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam
War Memorial. Your guide will discuss the impact of those events
and the symbols represented by the designers of these memorials.

UPTOWN ON U-STREET

Stroll down the "Black Broadway" that flourished in
the 1920's through the early 1960's. This is the neighborhood where
Duke Ellington went to school and performed his first composition,
'Soda Fountain Rag'. Visit the African American Civil War Memorial
that gives recognition to the US Colored Troops, Seamen and Black
Confederate soldiers who fought in the Civil War. Grab a hot dog
from Ben's Chili Bowl, the establishment where Bill Cosby once courted
his future wife Camille.

BLACK GEORGETOWN RE-VISITED

Climb the incline, over the C&O Canal on Wisconsin
Avenue to 'Herring Hill' - named by the Black residents who lived
in that western part of the city. See Mt. Zion United Methodist
Church, a stop on the Underground Railroad. Learn about the prominent
citizens, including the elder Yarrow Mamout, whose portrait was
painted by artist Charles Willson Peale. Hear about Father Patrick
Francis Healy, a Jesuit priest and first African American president
of a predominantly white university – Georgetown.

AVENUE OF LATIN LIBERATORS
2 Hours
The revolutionary spirit had sparked the entire world
in the late 18th century! The capital recognizes six Latin American
liberators in sculpture on Virginia Avenue. Walk to each of them,
and also see the Organization of American States on 17th Street.
Begin by viewing the statue of Simon de Bolivar, called 'the George
Washington of South America'. You will continue up the avenue and
end the tour at the Kennedy Center near the statue of Benito Juarez,
the Father of Modern Mexico.
